Hawaii Vacation – Big Island: Post 1

Standard

Today is Wednesday Feb 8th on the big island. I’ve been meaning to write this sooner, but by the time I get to the end of my days I’ve been so tired I’ve just gone to bed.

Friday Feb 3rd: In The Air

We left early in the morning on Friday Feb 3rd and took 3 very long flights to get to the Big Island in Hawaii. We flew all day from Pierson Toronto Airport to Los Angeles, Los Angeles to Atlanta, and Atlanta to the airport in Kona Hawaii.

We got into our first place at Castle Kona at about 3:40AM. It’s a good thing that we were only staying there for the night because the place was falling apart. The actual building seemed alright, but our room was fairly lack luster and actually falling apart. The only redeeming quality about the room was the view. it was quite spectacular and right on the water.

Saturday Feb 4th: Arrival at Kona Makai

In the morning, we went out for breakfast and mimosas! img_1726Afterwards, we drove around through town to familiarize ourselves with the area. We walked the shops, and visited the local market to kill time before we could check into our second place: Kona Makai. Also, we made sure to try some scandinavian shaved ice which came highly recommended by our neighbour.

img_1731

As it turns out, Kona Makai was only about 5 min down the road from Castle Kona. Kona Makai was a breath of fresh air! The grounds are immaculate, and our unit was roomy, clean, and tastefully decorated. Although the view from our lanai isn’t as good as our room in Castle Kona, I can see the ocean from my bedroom window! The couple that owns the unit we are staying in left us some helpful tips for exploring the beaches as well as some other things we may need. We found some boogie boards and snorkel equipment in our closets! Nita, one of the owners, I would presume, even competed in some Iron Man competitions! We saw where they were held when we were in town the day before. Needless to say, I was very happy we would be staying here for about a week.

Sunday Feb 5th: Beach Hopping

We spent the first full day at Kona Makai settling in. We went back to the market in town and well as Safeway to pick up some groceries. Since then, we seem to have visited Safeway almost every day (sometimes more than once a day). We never seem to leave there with everything we need and I’m surprised they don’t know us there yet.

For the rest of the day we drove north to scope out some beaches we’d possibly like to do some body surfing at. As it turns out, the term “beach” is relative. The black volcanic rockimg_1746 that surrounds the island is beautiful, but not conducive to a day at the beach. We were fairly hard pressed to find beaches that
had good stretches of sand. When we found some that had small patches, it required navigating around rocks both in and out of the water. What I will say though, in comparison to my experience on Maui, the wavers were HUGE and in abundance.

Aside from getting our feet wet, we didn’t really go in the water, so, we finished our day with a dip in the pool and hot tub.

Monday Feb 6th: Lava Lava / Lava Java

We spent most of the morning shopping in town for goodies for our ourselves as well as friends back home. By now we were fairly familiar with all the shops on Ali’i. By lunch time, we had found everything on our lists for shopping and went back to Kona Makai to make lunch. After lunch, we went for a swim.

It having been my mothers birthday, my after had made dinner reservations at Lava Lava (Beach Club) which came highly
recommended as the best place to have dinner on the beach. Getting there, was a mission and a half. Particularly because we all had it in our heads that we were heading to a place called Lavaimg_1782 Java we’d seen in town several times before. So, right off the bat, we were sure we were heading in the wrong direction. Oh, and I forgot to mention that we left late to begin with. By the time we figured out that we were going to Lava Lava and we made it all the way there, we were very late for our reservation. Luckily, we were still able to get a table and the food there was AWESOME. However, we got there quite late so it was already getting dark and it was quite windy…. Side note: I also made friends with a local cat 🙂

Tuesday Feb 7th:  Body Surfing & Cherry Blossoms

In the morning we visited our favourite beach and actually went body surfing. Navigating the rocks as well as the large waves seemed a daunting task (and was definitely a challenge). We ended up riding the larger waves towards shore well after they had crashed. It didn’t take long for me to find out I was out of practice when it came to body surfing. I started out the day with taking on a lot of (very salty) water. However, by the end of our outing, we were all catching waves and having fun.

For the remainder of the day, we traveled south to visit more beaches as well as the cherry blossoms. The cherry blossoms were located up on the mountain. As it turns out, it was fairly disappointing because the blossoms were not fully bloomed and there wasn’t actually that many trees. I would say we saw 20 max. However it was still a cool drive because we got to see up the mountain and the views were glorious. There were several instances as we were driving around where I had to stop and utter “wow” under my breath. It’s crazy how different it is up in the mountains. It’s like you’re out in the countryside. You would never guess that these places and the black rock beaches would be on the same island. One of the towns we went through was very western (like cowboy ranch western) and it just boggles my mind just how different even that was to some of these tropical towns.

Wednesday Feb 8th: South Point

Today we went for a long drive even farther south and beyond to Hilo. The original plan was to drive all the way to the bottom of the island and back. On the way there we visited Pu’ Uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park and we got to see a lot of cool carvings and structures.

Our next stop was South Point which was a breathtaking view of cliffs and water surrounded by open fields and rolling hills as far as the eye can see.

In search of food, on the way back we stopped at a local farm and saw some very strange looking ducks (that look like turkeys) and some parrots. We also, taste tested some locally grown coffee, honey, and chocolate covered macadamia nuts.

From there we were directed to Hilo (which was much farther than we had planned on going) for the closets restaurants. The drive to and from Hilo was amazing. Once again transported to a new world of lush rainforest and mountains. At one point we were actually driving in clouds. it was pretty wild.

More details, as well as photos and videos to come.

Pride & Prejudice

Standard

So this one isn’t really web related, more social media I guess, but I did get to do some pinterest-logodesign work. I haven’t done this in a while so bare with me on my rambling.

Today was a slow day and upon exhausting my usual searches on Pinterest I decided to look for some backgrounds for my phone. Well, see if you can follow my train of thought here:

iPhone Wallpapers > Quotes > Inspirational Quotes > Movie & TV Quotes > All Time Best Movie Quotes > Book Quotes > Pride & Prejudice.

And so, I spent a while relishing in the greatness that is P&P. I love the movie (I’ve seen it more times than I can count, new and old) and I’ve read the original, untouched version of the book. Magnificent! For me, the movie came first. Along with the story, the amazing cinematography and locations enchanted me. I hadn’t planned on reading the book but as I cam across it in the book store (it was one of those “classics” versions that  had the quote “How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book!” printed on the back) I couldn’t resist. I found it funny that I could picture them all while reading. And of course,  I would read everything in their voices; particularly Mrs. Bennet “Oh my poor nerves!”.

Anyways I was loving all the quotes, memes, and GIFs I was finding!

However, as much as I adored some of the quotes I was finding, I just didn’t like how they looked (I’ve very picky about what I put on my phone). So, as I designer there was only one thing to do, MAKE MY OWN! And because I love the internet (even though it can  be a weird and scary place sometimes) and I figure there has to be other P&P obsessed fans in the same predicament, I figured I would share my work. I havent tried them yet, but upon consulting the internet I had sized them for an iphone 5S screen.

The idea was to use backgrounds and fonts that would be stylish on a phone screen and didn’t necessarily have any scenery from the movie, but still be loosely related to some of the film’s imagery. For example, the marble texture relates back to the statues in Darcey’s mansion,  the stary night to the night of the Elizabeth and Darceys wedding, and of course the mountains (although not from Hawaii, still stunning).

The idea behind “She would certainly be a fearsome thing to behold” was a bit different. This was meant to be more Girl Power Inspiring than movie related. For me anyways. It needed to be bold and powerful, hence the stark black and white.

EMERGE – Week 13

Standard

So this week was fairly interesting to say the least.

In terms of my live blogging conquest, I managed to recruit one or two bloggers. Kimberly, the journalism head said that she would suggest another few. William basically said he is good to go for hosting the blog on the Magazine Website, he just needs me to pick a plugin or something I’d like to use.

Otherwise, I’ve spent the last week reworking my Mini Mag layouts. I’m happy I didn’t have to completely start from scratch to make them consistent with my other two group member’s layouts. It seemed as easy as adding a header and shuffling and tweaking things a bit. However I am much much happier with my layouts now tan when I first started. They look great! We had a rather tense sit-down with John and the rest o my group to try and figure out how we were all going to get this done on time. The issue seemed to be when we could add another day in to finalize layouts and get them print ready (since this weekend is Easter weekend). We decided that we would set up a master document with all the right settings that each of us could go off and work on on our own. John also went over with us how to get the pictures ready for print in photoshop. Today, John, Kathy, and I are getting together to put them all together so they are ready for print tomorrow. After receiving some minor fixes from Kathy, this is what I ended up with:

Next week we will be starting on the EMERGE Magazine layouts. Apparently we have at least four stories that are good to go which is great! Also I will be sitting down with Nick to hopefully get this live blogging plugin figured out and decided on.

… That’s the short version

EMERGE – Week 12

Standard

#shocked

So Nick reminded us that we have about 4 more weeks of class… thats a scary thought. In the next four weeks (and then some) I’m about to become very busy, and very popular. Last week (or this week, depending on how you look at it) I had way too many people that I individually needed to talk to.

I started off with Nick, letting him know that I would like to live blog the conference this year. He threw the idea out to us a week or two ago and there were no takers. I figure I like blogging, and my personal blog seems to be doing well so I might as well give it a shot… That and I don’t want to get stuck out in the parting lot directing people on the day of the conference. Nick suggested I talk to Kimberly (the journalism proff / overseer of the Magazine), the Web Mag team (for obvious reasons), and the team lead of the Conference just to give them a heads up.

After talking to the Web Mag team, we had decided that the blog made more sense to be hosted on the Conference Website. However, later in the night, after having spoken with Nick and Kimberly together we decided that it made sense for it to be hosted on both sites. During the week I have been in contact with Devin and William (the team leads of both sites) to discuss how this will work. From what I’ve been getting from Devin, it’s sounding like it will not be practical for him to host the blog on the site, but rather to advertise a link to it on the homepage. I have a feeling what will end up happening is that the link on the homepage will link to the blog on the Web Mag site.

After speaking with Kimberly I somehow became a Team Lead? giphyShe was very excited that someone had decided to take on the project! She suggested that I recruit some bloggers and spearhead the project. This was suggested for a few reasons:

a) I can’t be everywhere at once the day of the conference. The more people I can recruit, the more we can cover about the conference.

b) Being a Digital Communications Student, many of my expertise are in the back end. Although my writing is decent, the blog would benefit from having more seasoned writers (ideally journalism students)

c) It would be beneficial for readers to have different perspectives/styles to choose from when reading.

Other things I discussed with Kimberly included the “Voice” of the blog. Would we be blogging on behalf of EMERGE? or would be be more of an outside opinion? Throughout the week I have been thinking about this and I have decided that being an outside opinion suits my personal writing style the best and would be easier to work with in a team of bloggers.

Kimberly also suggested that I take a look at what was done last year and on other live blogs.

My meeting with the team lead of the Conference was fairly similar. He was completely stoked that we would be live blogging it. As far as he knows, there will be no one designated to be live tweeting, they were just going to let guests populate that feed. The only real input he had was that he would prefer if the posts were a little longer. Some of the blogs that Kimberly was showing  me from last year were highly populated with one liners. Personally, I think I would do better with a small paragraph or two.

As far as Art Direction goes, we’ve been working on our Mini Mag layouts. I personally didn’t really like my first draft so I sat down with John for the rest of the night to pick his brain and work through some of the problems. I actually found this really helpful and learned some cool stuff about InDesign too. Like creating libraries. They are actually very helpful. He also reminded me that the major objective here is to communicate the information… do that first before you make it look nice. Throughout the week I have been working on perfecting my layouts. One of the major challenges I’m facing though is that Kathy keeps emailing us every other day and changing the content… Not cool.

So ya, for this week we will hopefully have finals of Mini Mag stuff done. I think they are DUE at midnight tomorrow. I also need to spend some time this week trying to iron out where and how the blog will be hosted and recruiting some bloggers.

EMERGE – WEEK 11

Standard

So basically this week we are doing actual layouts for the mini magazine that is to be handed out at the awards and the conference. I am responsible for pages 6-10 of the 16 page mini mag (even though I already did the two page spread for pages 4&5 which was the teaser for the government story). Having said that, the layout I made I came up with without any of our actual content.

4-5. DPS – Mag teaser – Government story (spread)
Screen Shot 2015-03-17 at 6.25.58 PM
6. LS – Emerge Media Awards finalists
7. RS – EMAs program; profile Sean Beckingham
8. LS – EMAs judges
9. RS – Mag teaser – Gen Y and unstable contemporary life
10. LS – Mag teaser – Ballet Creole

Something tells me that I’m going to have a long night tonight. There’s going to be a lot of InDesigning going on. I’ll post screenshots of the pages when I’m done.
Last week in class John showed us some paper stocks and picked out what we would be using for the mini mag and the actual Magazine. Other than that we just went through some of the layouts we made and showed them to the magazine executives. They seemed to like my idea of having the magazine be (at least somewhat) consistent with the web mag. They thought at least having the colour bars running along the bottom of each page would be a good way to do that.Screen Shot 2015-03-16 at 10.45.03 PM
So for next week hopefully we will have a pretty much complete mini mag done that can be sent off for print.

EMERGE – WEEK 10

Standard

So as I mentioned before, this week we are wiring on page layouts. During our class meeting John gave us a quick little tutorial on InDesign and I actually learned a few things. 31bf29a184c0dc0a30e14128ed673b6d_400x400Somehow we also decided that We were gonna use the font Avenir for the Print Mag instead of buying a font…. It’s been a pretty weird week actually now that I think about it. Things seem to be moving in fast and slow motion. Overall though I think we’re in really good shape. It was also really nice to hear those comments about the judges liking our site! that was completely over-the-top awesome! I think it really sort of let everyone know that we ARE all doing ok.

So basically today I’ve been working at my tasks for the week while I’ve been at home sick.

I was asked to do:
4-5 layout templates (for the Print Mag) using dummy text and stock photography.
1 page = 800 words max
2 page = 1100 words max
3 page+ = 1400 words+

As well as these layouts for the Mini Mag:
2 page spread featuring the Gov. story
2 page spread with a tear-out Advertising the EMERGE Magazine
(These layouts should be Picture Heavy)

At the end of the day I got a little carried away doing layouts for the Print Mag; so Mini Mag stuff will have to be done tomorrow. However I must say that I was having fun doing photo essay Layouts. I probably also broke so many rules of page layouts that I’m sure John will point out tomorrow, but for now I’m happy with what I’ve got.

My first attempt at a spread didn’t go so well. It ended up looking Screen Shot 2015-03-16 at 10.39.32 PMmuch better in my head. My solution was to spend a bit of time away from it and look for inspiration. In fit, I found it in the rest of EMERGE. Since the website got such a good reaction from… well everyone, I decided to do page layouts inspired by the graphic they came up with for the side bar. I also found some inspiration in all the angles Miriam used in one of her posters.

Here’s What I Came Up With:

My biggest challenges were that I don’t really know what the content is or looks like. I found that once I started looking through the list of stories that my layouts might not work. I started having this problem especially with the three pager.

For next week we will hopefully have more final layouts of actual stories and probably a very final version of the mini mag since it needs to get printed soon.
